we've been expecting you.

My name is Ed Whetstone, and welcome to the Kludgeworks.

If you’re anything at all like me, you got into the animation industry because you love stories. And you want to be part of telling those stories.

In fact, you may have a story or two of your own that you want to tell.

Chances are, your ideas will never get the multi-million dollar budgets necessary to see the big screen, but the tools and technologies are getting cheaper and easier to use every day. There has never been a better time to make something for yourself.

Don’t get me wrong, making a film of any length or content is a massive commitment, and requires motivation, experience, and money. But it’s absolutely possible, and I’m here to help.

This site is dedicated to providing resources, training, and tools for artists in VFX and animation, especially those who want to make something for themselves, outside of the studio system.

For now, I’m focusing on running a pretty basic blog with advice and ideas, but over the next year I’ll be fleshing out the site with:

  • Scripts and plugins for Maya, Houdini, NUKE, and other VFX software
  • Music for independent productions
  • Textures and photos for CG art or VFX backplates
  • In-depth book reviews
  • Breakdowns and analysis of animated features and shorts
  • Current events in the world of animation and VFX
  • … And hopefully a lot more

Eventually, I’d love this site to become an entire network of VFX bloggers, with subscription-based training and a huge knowledge-base for students and professionals alike. That’s well down the road, though.

For now, I hope that you’ll join me on this journey. Subscribe using the link up above, and come this September, we’ll get started.
